In this year’s Strongest Islamic Banks by Balance Sheet evaluation, Al Rajhi Bank maintained its position as the world’s strongest Islamic bank. The evaluation is conducted using a comprehensive and transparent scorecard, assessing banks across six areas of balance sheet financial performance: ability to scale, balance sheet growth, risk profile, profitability, asset quality, and liquidity, with a focus on 14 specific factors. Middle Eastern banks outperformed their Asian counterparts in scale, risk profile, and profitability, while Asian Islamic banks demonstrated stronger asset quality.
Despite slower balance sheet growth, the global Islamic banking sector showed improved overall performance in FY2023. Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Kuwait recorded the highest average strength scores. Saudi Arabian Islamic banks excelled in asset quality and capitalisation but lagged in liquidity compared to their Turkish and Kuwaiti counterparts. Turkish Islamic banks exhibited higher profitability, while Kuwaiti banks showed strong liquidity. In Asia, Pakistani Islamic banks outperformed those in Indonesia and Malaysia, particularly in profitability and liquidity. Indonesian banks led in capitalisation, while Malaysian banks excelled in scale and asset quality.

The Asian Banker has been publishing the world’s first authoritative annual ranking of the Strongest Banks in Asia Pacific since 2007 based on balance sheet strength. It uses a detailed and transparent scorecard to evaluate the ranking which entails six areas of balance sheet financial performance: the ability to scale, balance sheet growth, risk profile, profitability, asset quality and liquidity. The ranking has since been expanded to include banks in the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia as well as Islamic banks globally.
In this year’s The Asian Banker Strongest Islamic Banks By Balance Sheet evaluation, Al Rajhi Bank retained the strongest Islamic bank ranking in the world. This is based on a detailed and transparent scorecard that evaluates Islamic banks on six areas of balance sheet financial performance, namely the ability to scale, balance sheet growth, risk profile, profitability, asset quality, and liquidity. Al Rajhi Bank excelled in all areas excluding liquidity.
Saudi Arabian and Turkish Islamic banks attained the highest average strength scores. Islamic banks in both countries registered strong balance sheet growth and remained well capitalised. Saudi Arabian Islamic banks demonstrated good asset quality and profitability, while Turkish Islamic banks recorded stronger liquidity. The strength score of the Asian Islamic banks averaged 2.8 out of five, lower than the average for all the 100 Islamic banks, at 2.99. Overall, these banks performed well in asset quality and capitalisation. Bank Mega Syariah, Maybank Islamic and Meezan Bank are the top three strongest Islamic banks in Asia. All these three maintained strong capital positions and reported asset quality improvement.

In this year’s The Asian Banker Strongest Islamic Banks By Balance Sheet evaluation, Al Rajhi Bank retained its top spot as the strongest Islamic bank. This is based on a detailed and transparent scorecard that evaluates Islamic banks on six areas of balance sheet financial performance, namely the ability to scale, balance sheet growth, risk profile, profitability, asset quality and liquidity. This year, financial information in the first half of the financial year 2020 (1H FY2020) was collated and incorporated into the assessment of how Islamic banks performed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The overall profitability of Islamic banks weakened amid the pandemic. The average return on assets stood at 1.1% in 1H FY2020, lower than 1.5% in 1H FY2019, and the cost to income ratio was up slightly from 41.3% to 41.5%. The average asset growth of Islamic banks listed accelerated from 8.7% year-on-year (yoy) at the end of 1H FY2019 to 13% yoy at the end of 1H FY2020, which is higher than the average asset growth recorded by the 200 largest banks in the Middle East and Africa at 10.9% yoy and the 500 largest banks in Asia Pacific at 10.3% yoy.

In this year’s The Asian Banker Strongest Islamic Banks By Balance Sheet evaluation, Al Rajhi Bank emerged as the strongest Islamic bank. This is based on a detailed and transparent scorecard that evaluates Islamic banks on six areas of balance sheet financial performance, namely the ability to scale, balance sheet growth, risk profile, profitability, asset quality and liquidity. The Asian Banker launched the inaugural evaluation of what will be an annual ranking of the largest and strongest Islamic banks, mainly in Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa.
The 100 largest Islamic banks posted an average asset growth of 8% after removing the anomaly of MBSB Bank in Malaysia, which completed the acquisition of Asian Finance Bank in 2018. It is higher than the average asset growth rates recorded by the 100 largest banks in the Middle East and the 500 largest banks in Asia Pacific, at 5.3% and 5.6%, respectively. On average, Saudi Arabia achieved the highest strength score at 3.9 out of five, followed by Kuwait (3.7), Qatar (3.5) and UAE (3.3).
